National Capacity Building on Career Guidance, Senior School

The Kenya Education Management Institute (KEMI), under the Kenya Primary Education Equity in Learning Programme (KPEEL), is set to roll out a nationwide two-day capacity-building programme on Career Guidance, Senior School Pathways, Tracks and Subject Choices for Grade 7, 8 and 9 learners. The programme will commence on Monday, 17th August 2026, and will be implemented across all 47 counties, running through 18th September 2026.

The initiative is designed to equip learners, teachers, school leaders and parents with the knowledge, information and resources required to support informed, interest- and ability-based decisions on Senior School pathways, tracks, subject combinations and future education and career opportunities. The programme is expected to benefit 21,493 Junior Schools, 42,986 Junior School/Career teachers and 21,493 Heads of Institutions nationwide.

As part of the intervention, nominated Junior School teachers will be trained on career guidance and Senior School pathways, while Heads of Institutions will be sensitized on their role in supporting learners to make appropriate choices. The programme will also provide learner- and parent-friendly Information, Education and Communication (IEC) materials, career assessment tools and digital resources to support informed decision-making.

Led by KEMI, the programme will be implemented through a coordinated multi-agency approach involving key education sector stakeholders, including the Ministry of Education, the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) and other relevant government agencies. Preparations for the nationwide rollout are in top gear, with the development, refinement and production of IEC and training materials now completed.

The National Training of Trainers (ToT) is scheduled for Thursday, 13th to Saturday, 15th August 2026. Following the training, the national trainers will depart on Sunday, 16th August, ready to commence the nationwide capacity-building exercise on Monday, 17th August.
